Instructions in Preparation for the Next Chainsaw Safety Course

  1. Please be there 15 minutes early so that we can get started right away.
  2. It is voluntary but I encourage you to bring your saw, especially if you would like to get some pointers on your own sharpening technique.
  3. Similarly it is a good idea to bring your sharpening equipment.
  4. Also bring your safety gear.
  5. I have asked a local chainsaw dealer and serviceman to demonstrate his equipment for display and for sale.

FAQ: Question about Chainsaw certification

Q: How do I get a chainsaw certificate, what does it entail, how much is it and can I do this through you?

Answer:
All certified courses are approved by Workplace Safety North.
See website: http://www.healthandsafetyontario.ca/WSN/Home.aspx

For their fee schedule for courses, for example for 2012 see:
http://www.healthandsafetyontario.ca/HSO/media/WSN/Resources/Downloads/WSN_Pricing_List_Jan_2012.pdf

From time to time, the Lower Ottawa Valley Chapter of the Ontario Woodlot Association also puts on a certified course but it is available to its members only.

You can join the Association to qualify for the certified course.

FAQ: Question on chainsaw course payment methods

Question: Is payment due the day of the course by cash only and/or cheque? Is visa an option and if so how/who do they send the card info to?

Answer: Payment has to be in cash at the start of the class. We will only accept a cheque from a commercial account. As a volunteer run organisation we are not financially structured to accept other types of payments such as Visa or Mastercard.

Answers to Questions

Q: My problem is I bought a new saw last week and am not sure which one to bring??

  • A: Bring both. It adds to the education, as the instructor will point out pros and cons of each and how to sharpen them both if they are different etc.
Q: Shall we bring anything for the course?
  • Bring your saw and any sharpening equipment you may have and your personal protection equipment.

Q: Will this course certify me as a cutter or chainsaw operator.

  • No this course which is available to all is only the classroom part that covers the safety and maintenance portion of the full training program. To meet the full certification you need to take a 2 or 3 day course which includes a classroom component as well as a field component where you will be cutting trees as part of the training. This course is only the classroom component.
  • If you are an OWA member see http://www.lov-owa.ca/category/chainsawcourse/ for details.
  • If you are not a member of the OWA and you want to be certified, contact the OFSWA Website for an instructor near you.

Thanks to you both for a great and informative afternoon. Looking forward to more OWA events in the future and would be interested in any future (chainsaw operator) certification programs.

Feedback on the April 10th 2010 Course

"The course was excellent, . . . . I learned a great deal. I signed up as a member (of the Lower Ottawa Valley Chapter of the OWA), too, so I expect to be learning a lot more as time goes on."

A great day

We had four great sessions again. I was reminded again about how complicated chainsaw operation, maintenance and sharpening can be. We all learned a better appreciation of what we don't know, me included and this is the 12th. time that I have seen the course.

I sense that we all come away from the course with the knowledge but the actual skill of saw sharpening is a whole other level of learning. It would be worthwhile to put on a workshop in future just on saw sharpening. That is a huge topic all on its own and draws a lot of interest.

Some feedback on the April 2009 Course

I would like to express my thanks for hosting the Chainsaw course. The life you saved was probably mine. I work in the Civic Hospital and cover the emergency department and every year we see patients who could have benefited from the chainsaw safety course. You very rarely get a second chance when an accident happens with a chain saw and your best protection is not to put yourself in that situation –the course went a long ways towards that.

Thanks,
Dave
